A three-stringed analysis phase got under way with:
1. User observations in Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany to identify working environmental issues, desired improvements from the point of view of daily users and an assessment of wear and tear on machinery.
2. This was followed by a thorough analysis of manufacturing aspects of the existing product.
3. Finally the company's sales staff were interviewed about their own and competitor products in order to identify Unique Selling Points.

Thereafter a number of needs specifications were formulated in regard to function and design, and the objective and value set for the development phase were defined in words and figures.
