The requirement specifications and user needs were outlined in sketch form and tested on an exhaustive range of function models – both on the drawing board and in the workshop. By placing the two wheels at the front, we could accommodate user needs to determine the width of the tricycle and to wheel it easily. After developing a series of sketched models, one favourite was selected and a function model was built – and three months later the new tricycle was born.
However, there still remained a lot of work to be done on the tricycle's steering assembly and consequently development work continued for the rest of the year. But finally the goal of shifting the cyclist's body weight when turning was achieved and the resulting solution was patented.
Following a 12-month development period, a finished design could be patented to protect against copy products for a period of 15 years.
